Simple Occupied Bed
Procedure
- Explain the procedure to the patient and gain consent; work with a second nurse where possible.
- Screen the bed, wash hands and don gloves and apron.
- Bring the linen to the bedside and place it on a chair in order of use.
- Loosen the bedclothes all round and remove the top bedding, covering the patient with a bath blanket.
- Turn the patient to one side with support, and roll the soiled bottom linen towards the patient’s back.
- Clean and dry the exposed mattress, then lay the clean bottom sheet and roll the surplus against the soiled roll.
- Turn the patient over the ridge to the clean side, supported by the second nurse.
- Remove the soiled linen into the bag, unroll and tighten the clean sheet, and mitre the corners.
- Reposition the patient, replace the top sheet and blanket with a toe pleat, and change the pillowcases.
- Leave the patient comfortable with the call bell in reach; clear away, wash hands and document skin observations.
