Tepid Sponging
Procedure
- Confirm the temperature is above 38.5°C and that antipyretic has been given as prescribed.
- Explain the procedure to the patient or caregiver and provide privacy.
- Close direct draughts but keep the room ventilated; use tepid water at about 30°C, never cold water or alcohol.
- Wash hands and gather bowl, sponges or flannels, towels and a bath blanket.
- Record the temperature, pulse and respiration before you start.
- Expose one area at a time and sponge with long, gentle strokes, leaving the skin slightly moist to allow evaporation.
- Place damp cloths in the axillae and groins and change them as they warm.
- Continue for about 20 minutes, observing constantly for shivering, pallor or distress.
- Stop immediately if the patient shivers — shivering raises the temperature further.
- Dry the patient, dress in light clothing, and recheck the temperature after 30 minutes.
- Record the temperatures before and after, the duration and the patient’s response.
